Tags

Welcome to the Q2 2026 issue of The SMB M&A Pipeline, the quarterly series that surfaces a top-of-the-funnel breakdown of the deal activity on Axial’s platform. The aggregated metrics include quarterly deal volumes, financial and geographic characteristics, and pursuit rates, sorted by industry category.

Q2 2026 Overview

Record Quarterly Deal Volume

In Q2 2026, 3,523 deals came to market via the Axial platform, a 4.79% increase from the same period last year and the highest quarterly total on record.

Technology Leads Industry Growth

Technology recorded the strongest year-over-year increase, with a 23.52% increase compared to Q2 2025. The increase suggests technology companies continue to occupy a favorable position in the M&A market, supported by healthy buyer demand and scalable, recurring revenue models. For additional data and market commentary, see Axial’s 2026 Lower Middle Market Technology Top 50.

Record Activity Wasn’t Driven by One Industry

Technology generated the largest YoY increase, but the quarter’s record total reflected growth in businesses brought to market across most industries. Six of the seven major sectors saw increases compared to the same time period last year, with Transportation, Business Services, and Healthcare also posting double-digit growth.

Deal Volume vs. Pursuit Rate

Industrials Tops Both Supply & Demand

For the fourth consecutive quarter, Industrials ranked 1st in both deal volume and buyer pursuit rate, continuing to stand out as the sector where the supply of businesses brought to market and buyer demand remain most closely aligned. For a deeper look at the buyers, advisors, and trends shaping the industrials market, see our 2026 Lower Middle Market Industrials Top 50.

Transportation & Healthcare Generated Outsized Buyer Interest

Transportation showed the largest gap between supply and demand, ranking 7th in deal volume but 2nd in pursuit rate. Healthcare had a less dramatic mismatch, with a 6th-place deal volume ranking and 4th-place pursuit rate.

Food & Hospitality & Consumer Goods Saw Lower Relative Demand

Food & Hospitality and Consumer Goods were among the highest sectors in deal volume, ranking 2nd and 3rd, respectively. However, both ranked near the bottom in buyer pursuit rate (7th and 6th), suggesting buyers are being more selective in sectors that can carry greater exposure to consumer demand variability.

Business Services & Technology Were Closely Aligned

Business Services ranked 5th for both deal volume and pursuit rate, reflecting a balanced relationship between new deal supply and buyer demand. Technology also remained relatively balanced, ranking 4th in deal volume and 3rd in pursuit rate.
