SensorComm Technologies, Inc. (SCT) designs, develops and manufactures hardware and software-based advanced sensor systems specifically for pollution/emission monitoring in the Diesel Transportation and Smart City segments. SensorComm is accelerating the global adoption of IoT-based NOx measurement and monitoring.
SensorComm has developed a patented, robust NOx sensor to enable compliance, control and optimization for next-generation emission control systems and enables a new generation of monitoring solutions currently not available in the marketplace. SCT provides a better technology that is more sensitive, provides a more consistently reliable measurement, and is more cost-effective than incumbent solutions. Using an IoT (Internet of Things) platform, we can provide our customers with the ability to reduce costs by gaining operational efficiencies in areas that include: avoidance of regulatory penalties (from new and tighter emission regulations), fuel savings and maintenance.
IoT (Internet-of-Things) NOx Measurement and Monitoring
SensorComm has positioned its sensor at the core of an Internet-of-Things (IoT) strategy for low-level NOx emission measurements. The IoT strategy, coupled with the low sensitivity of the NOx sensor, provides a unique capability to not only measure emissions (which leads to control), but also monitor NOx to identify the source of emissions (leading to compliance). By creating a network of high volume, highly sensitive NOx measurements in Smart City applications, the platform for real-time, hyper-local air quality measurements can be established. In addition, this data can be combined with currently available air quality data and used to project future NOx profiles to optimize traffic flow while minimizing air quality related health issues from vehicular emissions. In the OEM segment (which is responsible for 75% of emissions in the U.S. alone), licensing the technology to a manufacturing partner provides the fastest adoption for emission control while still allowing for monitoring. The IoT strategy provides three distinct and complementary revenue streams – licensing, hardware sales and monitoring.
Volkswagen Situation Establishes Clear Opportunity for Compliance, Enforcment and Monitoring
Compliance, control and optimization is driving the demand for lower NOx measurement capability in all market segments. The problem stems from a recent report published by an independent testing agency, the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT), which has shown that real-world NOx emissions from EURO 6 diesels can be up to 7 times higher than EURO 6 regulatory levels, even during normal driving conditions. In addition, the recent Volkswagen situation, where emission levels were found to exceed regulations by greater than 20 times, establishes a clear opportunity for compliance, enforcement and monitoring.
Smart Cities Expected To Be $1.7T Market by 2025
A 2015 report by McKinsey “The Internet of Things: Mapping the Value Beyond the Hype” estimates by 2025 Smart Cities are projected to be a $1.7T market focusing on resource management, transportation, public safety and health. Smart City Pilot Programs utilize mobile applications including buses, taxis and first response vehicles and stationary applications including smart lighting and power generation. In Europe, 5,870 cities have signed on to go further than the EU climate targets via the EU Covenant of Mayors. SensorComm’s Priority Targets will also include “Siemen’s 30” European Green City Index.
