VeriTran™ designs and builds energy-efficient Infinitely Variable Transmissions. These mechanical transmissions can improve energy efficiency and lower costs in many processes that account for a large fraction of the energy consumed by industrial nations. Examples include: pumps (positive displacement and centrifugal); conveyors (constant or variable torque); compressors (piston, gear and centrifugal); fans; electrical generators at remote sites; solar powered electrical motors and others. VeriTran™ transmissions are compatible with any rotary power source, such as electric motors, internal combustion engines and gas or steam turbines. Due to their ubiquitous nature and the large fraction of energy consumed by electric motors, we are focusing our initial products on electric motor driven applications. Twenty-three percent of electricity consumed in the US industrial segment is used to power electric motors (DOE, 1998). National efforts are being applied to reduce electricity consumption through conservation, improvements in efficiency, and migration to solar and other renewable energy sources where possible. VeriTran™ has addressed these initiatives with our cost-effective energy-saving infinitely variable transmissions (IVT) s. These IVTs can be applied as a sustaining improvement in traditional markets which currently employ electric motor power. Additionally, this technology can be employed in conjunction with solar energy (or small wind turbines) to enable off-grid applications which are not currently addressed by competing technologies. The basic U.S. electric motor market is over $6B/year and growing slowly, but steadily at 6%. A sub-set of this market, the variable or adjustable speed motor drive (ASD) market, is growing 24% annually. Adjustable speed motor drives can significantly reduce energy consumption by as much as 30%; this explains the growth in the ASD component of the electric motor market. The VeriTran™ IVT competes with the ASD as a superior sustaining technology capable of reaching markets inaccessible to the ASD. OEM industries that need ASDs are well aware of their benefits and many are targeting transitions in their system designs. However, these system manufacturers are currently squeezed between the economic realities of current motor drive products and the need to provide their end-user customers with the required performance. • The existing class of mechanical ASDs offers simplicity of operation, ease of integration, low maintenance, and minimal or no impact on other system functions. Unfortunately, they offer relatively low technical performance in terms of transmitting motor power and torque to the load. This limits their applicability and their benefits to the end user. • The newer class of electronic power supply driven drives, mostly known as variable frequency drives (VFDs), provides high quality technical performance for limited applications. However, they do so at a significant price. Efficiency is reduced at full motor speed, and falls off rapidly at low motor speeds. The best VFD’s can generate only about two times motor torque at low speed. Additional subsystems must be incorporated into the facility. More expensive definite purpose motors must be purchased. More sophisticated skills must be taught to those responsible for performing the maintenance, and other facility design issues must be addressed. • Further, neither class of existing drives adequately addresses a key component of cost and efficiency, namely oversized motors. Currently most electric motors are purchased at 50% to 100% higher power than needed to operate in “steady state” conditions. This over sizing is required to start the motor under load and to accelerate the load to operating speed, and is always accompanied by a large “in rush” of electrical current to the motor. However, when the motor is up to speed the extra power (and current) is no longer needed, and the oversized motor operates most of the time at significantly less than full power. This results in inefficiencies which waste energy, and often results in “surcharges “or “power factor charges” by the utility company. VeriTran™ transmissions minimize or eliminate the deficiencies of the two current classes of adjustable speed drives while providing all the benefits and extending the range of applicability. VeriTran™ mechanical drives are easily maintained and function well with premium efficiency electric motors. VeriTran™ products can achieve the level of motor speed, power and torque control previously seen only in electronic drives. VeriTran™ drives eliminate the need to oversize the motor, hence reducing current in-rush to near its theoretical minimum, improving efficiency and reducing power factor losses. VeriTran™ transmissions enable variable speed/high torque applications (such as positive displacement pumps, conveyors, etc.) that are inaccessible to current electronic ASDs. For example the VeriTran™ transmission can produce up to 20 times the torque of a 15 hp motor operating at 3500 rpm. This is about 10 times better than the best electronic VFD. The VeriTran™ transmission is complementary to both the mechanical and electronic ASDs on the market. While there are applications where an existing class of ASD will be suitable, the VeriTran™ transmission will enable major new applications and open markets inaccessible with current products. The petroleum industry is a leading contender where we are seeking partnerships because it is replete with pumping applications that can benefit from a 50 horsepower class of mechanical ASD. VeriTran™ is also able to provide mechanical energy-saving ASDs to the petroleum industry for smaller applications in the 15 to 30 hp range. VeriTran™ is tracking other industries, such as mining and aggregate production for potential partnerships although these are not currently the top priority. These industries, and others are seen as growth areas for the VeriTran™ mechanical ASDs. We welcome investors who are interested in becoming a pioneering part of the exciting energy-saving mechanical adjustable speed drive business that is underserved by other current technologies. VeriTran™ has completed a series of prototype tests over the past five years and is now in the process of seeking investors to help fund beta testing in operational environments. To establish a VeriTran™ market entry, the immediate goal is to form relationships with business partners who have both application needs and distribution access to major segments of an industry in which they are active as well as a capability to provide equity investment of no less than $350 K.
