Our family office is looking to acquire a business or portfolio of small businesses for our family’s long term ownership. The ideal business has consistent and stable earnings and operates in an industry which is unlikely to experience dramatic technological disruption. Companies where the owner has built a strong management infrastructure or where the owner does not have to play a day to day or daily local role in management would be ideal. Categories that we have an interest in include waste management, coin laundry, infrastructure construction (such as paving), or other categories where there is a strong local franchise and some form of recurring revenue. Because we live in the DMV and understand that this scale of business will require some in person involvement and oversight, we have been limiting our search to DC, VA, and MD. We are primarily focused on durability of cash flows and cash on cash ROI. If there is growth potential, that is secondary.
We are open to looking at businesses with $250K → $2M SDE and we have several million in cash available to support equity investment.
My background is that after attending Yale I founded a technology company which ultimately went public. I direct our family office which has investments in public equities, private equity, venture capital, and real estate. Two years ago I started my own venture capital firm and we have started a process of shifting the family's other assets towards assets that are more cash flow oriented. We decided that a component of this strategy would be to acquire a business or portfolio of small businesses, with the ultimate goal of building to a portfolio with $2-4M of cash flow per year. Before starting my investment firm, I founded and built a healthcare services firm where we acquired 45 OB-GYN practice locations, so I have a good amount of experience with SMB acquisitions and the various challenges and opportunities.
