Whether you want to compete or just have a good time, the ranch has a wide range of facilities, knowledegable trainers and most importantly, a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.
The ranch is located in the Sierra foothills near the historic mining town of Columbia, CA. Accessed from Highway 49 the ranch is only 10 minutes from Sonora and 15 minutes from Angels Camp. The elevation avoids the worst of the summer heat and winter snow so the riding is enjoyable all year round! For those traveling with horses, the ranch offers overnight stabling, with hotels and camping nearby.
The Flying R Ranch is a family operated business. The ranch was purchased in 1970 by Royce Rickman , a retired United Airlines pilot who had fallen in love with the beauty of Tuolemme county. He and his wife Marge created the Flying R as a breeding facility for Appaloosa horses. When he retired from breeding, the ranch was opened as a boarding and training facility, and his extremely accomplished daughter Marilyn took over the reins.
Family is still the focus of the ranch, with Royce still handling arena grooming and maintenance and Marge mothering everyone who is part of the ranch.
