Dianne Halloway is a Female and Minority-Owned High-End Line of Men's Footwear, seeking $150,000 to $1,000,000 from an angel investor or other provider of capital for a prototype stage brand (mens footwear) to advance the company into production stage. Created, conceptualized, and designed by D'Metra Macedon, she has secured contracts with manufacturers in Spain, Portugal, Italy and France, and received inquiries and interest from Barney's New York, Nordstrom, and Jordan Brand (to name a few) after viewing her sample collection (see document room). Of late, she has been invited to Fashion Week in New York, Tokyo, and Paris. A three-time national track and field champion at the collegiate level and graduate of Arizona State University, D'Metra Macedon put her running shoes on the shelf (for now) to pursue designing her own high-end fashion line. With her men's footwear line, she is looking to enter an until-now male-dominated landscape. About D'Metra Macedon:
My name is D'Metra Macedon, but I'm better known as Dianne Halloway. I graduated from Arizona State University back in 2008 with the emphasis of studying industrial design with a B.I.S degree. Only by choice, I had to step out of the school of design due to pursue running track and field; It was arguably too strenuous and time consuming to pursue both at the same time. I completed the sport I loved, bringing in 3 national championships earning 4 rings, meeting the president and managing to become the 9th fastest in ASU school history. After college, though I had the opportunity to go pro, I opted to change course, and pursue a career in Design.
2010, I created my very first shoe concept. I called it the "Blacc Republicc". I stuck with the name and researched manufacturers to help develop this concept. Thankfully, my brother who is one of the writers for the hit show Criminal Minds and now with the show "POWER"..his wife's father turned his long life hobby of producing/creating and selling carpets with faces of such artist like Elton John, Madonna and so forth into a career..which directed me to my very first manufacturer.
After developing my first concept and receiving the prototype, I was so enthused that I told a friend about it, but didn't mention who was the creator behind it (to gauge his reaction). Soon after, as being the anonymous designer, my footwear spread throughout Facebook generating likes and comments of people requesting where to buy. Such likes and people inspired by my work came from places like: South Africa, Indonesia, Germany, London, England, Ghana, Bulgaria, Chile. My one hang-up was entering into a field that was predominantly run by a bunch if men. Though, after telling a friend that I created the concept ..he didn't believe it, ignorant to believe I was just a gym rat and a typical to start a career in sports.. Not knowing I had the skill to design and bring to fruition.
Because of my friends disbelief, at the time I wanted to prove a point that women can create men's footwear. After some thorough research, subsequently coming up with hardly any prominent women in the field of industrial design let alone footwear - I set out with a goal; to be the first woman developing her own men's footwear brand. Why men you ask? By now you have certainly heard of the top designers of America. Tom Ford, Phillip lain, Marc Jacobs, Alexander Wang to name a few that are most inspiring in the field of fashion. As menswear climbs, there are a few men designers being recognized for their work: Thom Browne, Marcus Wainwright & David Neville, Rag & Bone, Dao-Yi Chow & Maxwell Osborne, and Public School (to name a few) were all nominated this year and awarded as the best men designers of the year. The list continues on with great men designers but these names provided are among the top. What you don't usually see is a woman within those nominations; specially in the field of men's wear or mens footwear.
I received friend requests from likes of rappers, entertainers such as: producer/rapper Swizz Beatz the husband of Grammy award winner Alicia Keys, Singer/song writer Producer Ne-Yo, Actor(s)- Pooch Hall, Tommy Davidson, Shamar Moore etc. Met singer/rappers -Chris Brown, Tyga, Yo Gotti, Jada Kiss, Swizz Beatz ....All rewarding. With all said and done I been requested to speak at youth groups and in magazine write ups and interviews. (...Below you will see the list of press).
As a designer I have plans to launch my high-end sneaker edition called the Python collection catered to men this fall. I became inspired due to the lack of women and minority women in the field of men's footwear. In this journey I look to be the prominent African American woman to have her own male footwear collection and to one day be the next American men's footwear designer. My request is your help and the help of my school to get my footwear project off the ground with it taking a funding of 25,000 to order a few small bulk orders to send out to boutiques and department partner stores and fulfill the rest for my travels of this year invites to the below fashion shows.
Last I had received a request of my first concept from Nordstrom's for 20,000 pairs but I was not able to fill because I was just getting started. Of course learning the business there could of been ways to get my project off the ground with a purchase order from Nordstoms...but I wasn't thinking and way to excited. Same goes for their competitor Barney's New York.
While it is important to bring my project to life a recent study, independent analysis stated of woman in the field of men's footwear is at 4%, and even a smaller percent at 0.2 of minority. You will find the information I present is compelling as there are more men creating women's wear and footwear. It's the woman's turn to dress the man.
I realize there are many projects to choose from, but your help will be critical as my hope is to unite more designers like myself the chance to pursue the career in men footwear and to be called one day the next men's American footwear designer.
