About The Producers:
Michael Roberts: Michael Roberts is the author, composer and lyricist of the hit Off-Broadway comedy GOLF: THE MUSICAL After its critically-acclaimed 2003-2004 Off-Broadway run at the John Houseman Theater, there continue to be dozens of national and international productions. In the nine years since its New York debut, GOLF has been revived Off-Broadway twice, and has played in twenty-five US states, and in five countries on four continents, from Japan to New Zealand and Scotland. Recently there have been new productions in Texas, Canada, and Finland. He is a two-time recipient of the ASCAP PLUS AWARD for his work in musical theater.
He wrote the book, music and lyrics to GREED: A Musical for Our Times, produced this season Off-Broadway at New World Stages.
He is the composer and lyricist for the Off-Broadway musical, THE FARTISTE, which won the award for Best Musical at the 2006 Fringe NYC Festival. A successful run Off-Broadway in the 2011-2012 season was followed by a concert performance at The Charing Cross Theatre on London's West End. In the spring of 2015, Michael will premiere his new musical THE GOLDSTEIN VARIATIONS Off-Broadway, with book by THE FARTISTE collaborator Charlie Schulman.
Michael’s THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES, a one-man show about Bob Hope featuring two-time Tony-nominee Joel Blum, received its premiere at Peoria's Prairie Theater in 2006, with a second production in Marin, CA in 2010. He was, for fifteen years, the composer/lyricist and music director for The Broadway Kids, which had a successful run at The Lambs Theater in 2005-2006, and returned to Off-Broadway at New World Stages in December, 2008.
Michael composed the incidental music for 2007's MY SECRET GARDEN at New York's 45th Street Theater, and The Storm Theatre's TIDINGS BROUGHT TO MARY (2009). He also arranged incidental music for the Off-Broadway hit JEWTOPIA.
Michael’s music for the screen includes independent films, documentaries and features, including Tri-Star’s “Love Walked In,” starring Dennis Leary, and the multiple-award-winning “Lemonade Stand.” His music for television includes four seasons as a composer for the Emmy-Award-Winning sitcom “Remember WENN.” Additional television credits include music for ABC, CNN, ESPN, The Golf Channel, and Bravo, As a music director, he has collaborated with Donna Murphy, Rupert Holmes, Richard Kind, Leslie Gore, Hinton Battle, Stephanie Mills, Peter Noone, Bobby Sherman, Joan Rivers, and The Capitol Steps, as well as numerous stage productions. Michael was a nominee for a 2012 Broadway World Award for his work in musical direction.
Charlie Schulman: Charlie is a playwright, screenwriter, theater producer, script-doctor and native New Yorker. He is is pleased to be collaborating on the musical THE GOLDSTEIN VARIATIONS with his creative and producing partner, Michael Roberts. The Schulberts first musical together, THE FARTISTE, was produced at The NYCFringe Festival (Outstanding Musical) and Off-Broadway at Under Sofia's in 2011. THE FARTISTE, based on his original screenplay of the same name, was presented in concert performance at The Charring Cross Theater in London's West End.
Charlie's plays "THE BIRTHDAY PRESENT" and "THE GROUND ZERO CLUB" were produced Off-Broadway by Young Playwrights Inc. which was founded by Stephen Sondheim. He served for ten years on Young Playwrights Board of Director’s and founded The Advanced Playwriting Workshop that recruited talented student playwrights from New York City Public Schools.
Charlie’s plays have been presented internationally at The Seymour Center in Sydney, Australia and The Soho Poly Theater in London. He is a three-time winner of The Avery Hopwood Award for Drama from The University of Michigan. He also received the Paulette Goddard Fellowship from New York University. His plays include: ANGEL OF DEATH, THE KITCHEN, THE COMMON ENEMY, THE GREENE HOUSE EFFECT, CHARACTER ASSASSINS and THE GREAT MAN. His plays have received world premiers at The American Jewish Theater, The Magic Theater, New Jersey Rep and Theater J. He is the recipient of The Charles McArthur Award for comedy from The National Playwrights Conference and received the 2011 Walton Fellowship from Arena Stage. He was named a finalist for 2013 The Terrence McNally Award for his play THE GREAT MAN.
THE GOLDSTEIN VARIATIONS is based on his play THE KITCHEN, which was presented at The National Playwrights Conference at The Eugene O'Neill Theater Center in 1998. His plays are published by The Dramatists Play Service and in The Ground Zero Club and other Prize Winning Plays (Dell/Bantam).
For three seasons Charlie wrote sketch-comedy for the nationally syndicated “Apollo Comedy Hour.” He has sold 1/2 hour television pilots to CBS and Twentieth Century Television. He has recently completed a screenplay called FRANKENSWINE. Charlie teaches Playwriting at New York University and is on the faculty of Spalding University’s low residency MFA program in Creative Writing.
