Each year, over 550,000 patients in the U.S. alone will undergo procedures where arteries or veins are surgically connected (anastomosis). These procedures are performed in reconstructive, transplant and vascular surgery. Invariably, there is a risk of a clot (thrombosis) forming in the newly connected vessels during the postoperative period. Detecting clot formation in a rapid manner allows intervention to remove the clot before it permanently blocks the vessels and is key to preventing catastrophic and costly surgical failures. To have a successful clot monitoring device, it is necessary to identify the surgical site and acquire blood flow data accurately over time from this location. Ultrasound is ideal for vascular monitoring — but only if simplified for non-expert users. To make postoperative vascular monitoring by non-sonographers a reality, SONAVEX developed the EchoSure system. The two-part solution consists first of an absorbable tissue marker to delineate the surgical site (EchoMark) and software (EchoFind) to guide users to the right position and extract blood flow data. This makes it possible for nurses without specialized sonographic training to monitor for clot formation. No special hardware beyond a low cost, portable ICU or OR ultrasound is required. EchoFind then analyzes and quantifies flow trends, supporting early clot detection prior to complete blockage.
