Hamilton Health Center was established to provide health care services to individuals regardless of their financial and insurance status. Grassroots efforts by community residents in 1969 initiated the development of this health center, which opened in a renovated church education center by 1973. Rev. Robert Bailey was the first project director, Dr. Walker Kirker the first medical director; and Dr. Sara McKeever (Prioleau) was hired to develop the initial dental department. Dr. Robert G. Little was the first staff physician and continues to serve on the Board of Directors. The Walnut Street facility opened in the 1990s to provide WIC and dental services. Both Fulton Street and Walnut Street facilities provide services, and HHC has added WIC services at Fifth and Kelker Streets and a health center at Foose School. Forty percent of the health center patient base is male; 60 percent is female; 67 percent is 18 years of age or older; 46 percent is African American, 22 percent is White; 21 percent is Latino; 87 percent of patients are 200 percent of poverty or lower.
