Welcome to the August edition of Axial’s Lower Middle Market Digest, your source of news and deal announcements featuring boutique investment banks, family offices, private equity-backed portfolio companies, and lower middle market businesses.

Thought leadership. Everyone’s talking about it, many are trying it, very few are doing it well.

In a market where competition is rife, both buyers and investment banks are looking to brand development and content creation as opportunities to differentiate themselves from their peers.

In today’s Monthly Digest, we’ll shine a light on a handful of Axial members that exemplify what it take to build a great brand.

Buyers: Humanize your portfolio with community building

Rockbridge Equity is the family office of Dan Gilbert, founder of Quicken Loans. As part of the Rockbridge value prop, portfolio company executives join the firm’s “Family of Companies.”

The program comprises a “Family Reunion” – an annual event that brings together Family of Company leaders to celebrate successes, collaborate on best practices, and continue expanding and improving their network – as well as the Rockbridge Summit, a bi-annual event focused on building relationships across their Family of Companies, with other portfolio companies, industry experts, and intermediaries. The events themselves are reinforced with tactical and operationally focused content to provide company owners with ongoing education and support throughout the portfolio company lifecycle.

The feedback we receive from all market participants regarding these programs, especially company owners, is overwhelmingly positive. From an owner, CEO, or CFO perspective, it is truly difficult to cut through the noise of 10,000 family offices + private equity suitors to identify those with the culture, personality, value system, and expertise that align with their own. Often times, especially for lower middle market family owned & generational businesses, a firm’s brand and how it is perceived could be the deciding factor if the valuation is within a click or two of the competition.

Investment Banks & Advisors: Educate readers on topics they might not be familiar with – but probably should

Great content means you write with the intention of truly educating people.

A perfect example of this strategy done well is advisory firm Armanino LLP’s recent article on Profit Interests in LLCs. When reading the title of their piece, How to Account for “Profits Interests” in LLCs, plenty of people will ask themselves, “what are Profits Interests?”. As Armanino lays out, profit interests are a relatively new form of equity compensation issued by limited liability companies, that has seen a recent spike in traction. In light of it being a newer concept, Armanino evokes the sentiment that they stay current with market trends and show their expertise through education rather than simply saying so on their website.

All in all, whenever you’re writing content, keep in mind the two primary tenets of brand identity – your relatability and the extent to which you truly educate your readers.
